AL GATMAITAN, tenor (lirico-spinto), actor and host, a Libran who always seeks good adventure in life and things that will make his instrument excel and win over mediocrity.
The five year educational training and experience at the College of Music of the University of the Philippines both in classical music and theater combined with the rigorous rehearsals, trainings and performances demanded by different theater groups such as the Dulaang UP, UP Playwrights and PETA where he started his career honed him to be what he is today. He was fortunate to be directed by the brilliant directors, the likes of Soxie Topacio, Kris Adalia, Alex Cortez and the late Ogie Juliano. Their mentoring molded him to believe that he has what it takes to be on stage, just how the late director and professor Ogie Juliano used to tell him, “Al, you are something.”
His venture continued to shine as he became part of Trumpets and STAGES but it didn’t stop him to just sit on his laurels. There’s always room for improvement and just as he believes that all these are graces from God so does he believe to whom much is given, much is expected. With this faith and for search of concrete knowledge, he left home, gathered his strength, faith and hope, and embarked on his great adventure in life in the heart of Europe. It was in Italy, where the classical art was born that he found himself immersing in the culture, language and the arts. His three years of stay in Italy for language studies, bonded with rigid vocal and acting training from highly renowned masters of the performing arts, in full bright scholarships, proved that these people believed in what he can do. His European audiences loved him so much to the point that the image he projected helped the Filipino Community to uplift their dignity in the eyes of nationalities abroad. He had the chance to join the first Filipino European Pop Song festival in Reggio Calabria, Italy where he bagged the first place in the elimination round then second place in the finals.
Now that he is finally home and prepared, definitely his experience and exposures abroad molded him to be what it takes to be called the “true artist.” With a humble and kind heart he wishes to continue conquering the hearts of Filipino audiences. And with the radiant ideas and managing skills of the Philippine Opera Company, he is confidently sure that he could give a first-rate impression of the performing arts scene and finally be elevated to be called AL GATMAITAN, THE ARTIST PAR EXCELLENCE!
